a spirit. This word is part of Fulɓe folk lore. There are many ideas of what the "beelu" is. Some identify it as being the same thing as "yonki." They say if a "sukunya" eats someone's beelu they will die, so it must be the same as "yonki." There is a variety of opinions as to the activity of one's beelu. Some say if you dream about being somewhere it is actually your "beelu" that has gone there and is seeing what you are dreaming. Some say that it can be seen walking about just before someone dies. Particularly, occultists claim to be able to see the "beelu" of someone who is about to die. They also claim they can make the "beelu" return into the person so they do not die. Some claim you can see the "beelu" of someone after they have died. Others claim there is a special place where the "beeli" go after the death of their bodies and they are never seen again. A. H. Ba said that the "beelu" leaves the tomb the fourth day after soneone dies and distances itself from the living ("Les Bergers du Soleil", Mathieu p.86). The confusing thing is that the "yonki" is invisible but occasionally the "beelu" is seen.
